Dr. Peggy Drexler, author of Our Fathers Ourselves, wrote an article questioning whether or not women in the workplace had won what she calls “the quiet revolution.” She cites many instances where women have more education than men, and talks about how women are beginning to make major decisions regarding economic growth and downturns. She also talks about the view that women are being suppressed, but shows both sides of this viewpoint, depicting women as the highly educated gender which is competing for better and better jobs, while men are grabbing jobs whenever and wherever they can. So, the rise in male employment does not necessarily mean that women are not being treated equally. They simply opt for better opportunities and enjoy better lifestyles because they are willing to compete for them, rather than settling for whatever they can get their hands on.
The topic of women and work is, however, not the topic of this article. Dr. Drexler believes that talent, like all resources, travels where it is appreciated and treated well. She describes how personal talent cannot be programmed or copied, and so therefore it retains its value over time. Her original point is that women are treating their talent with greater care and attention, which will result in their having increasingly greater economic influence, but this can apply to many different things. Talent is drawn toward people who treat it well, and this includes drug and alcohol testing in the workplace. It may seem to some as if you are just following company protocol, but the reality is that employee drug and alcohol testing is a valid and well respected resource. Do not discount its benefits to your business.
Treating your employee drug program with care and attention, much like you would treat your body if you were an athlete, is important in maintaining high quality company standards. It is this meticulous attention to detail which shows your customers, your employees and yourself that your business is a worthy investment.
