Simplicity and Power

Who is the most powerful person you know? How exactly do they maintain their power? Does it have anything to do with their abilities and breath testing productstalents, or is it more a matter of what they are willing to do to simplify a complex problem into a simple one? Simplicity and power go hand in hand, and they are both a part of a well balanced person who understands who they are and what they want out of life.

Simplicity is not the same thing as naiveté, nor is it the same thing as simple minded. Rather simplicity results from the ability to control your own mind from becoming too complex too soon when thinking over different matters. Power and responsibility are similar things, but power and simplicity use similar techniques to sustain themselves.

When we, as humans, make and break relationships with each other, we come to understand just how complex life can get. But, when we simplify our relationships down to give and take, nurture and receive, as well as maintaining our own identities, we become more powerful than we first realized we could be.

The same thing applies to business.

When people in business have a strong understanding of the simple business process overlaying throughout the company, they can then correctly focus on their little bit of the company structure and they can focus on the details regarding that. However, when even the lowliest of employees are not aware or informed enough to understand how the company operates as a whole, then their attempts to be successful can have more destructive capacities than productive ones. Therefore, it is important to know what type of business in which you are working, and what the overall structure of the business is and what the functions are of the key players in the company.

By the same token, it is good to know about any employees who are not measuring up to your business standards, at least as far as company policy goes. If your any of your employees are abusing drugs or alcohol while at work, then you must know about it. CMM Technology brings our drug test equipment and our NATA accredited breathalyser recalibration services to the Australian business marketplace. See what we can offer you, in terms of both simplicity and power: (+61) 1300 79 70 30.

If We Were Gods and Dogs Were Men

lifeloc breathalysersMany people have throughout the course of human history of how simple things would be if we were gods instead of humans. And, more than that, if we made dogs into men, because we easily understand and can control dogs. This would, in many people’s minds, create an idealistic time here on earth, especially considering all of the normal hardships we normally suffer based upon our own human limitations.

If we were gods and dogs were men, it would seem that our world would be easily controllable and that we would be able to live easily and simply just as we are today. However, this is an incorrect interpretation of idealistic circumstances. The truth is that dogs and men are both so fallible, so prone to making mistakes and then punishing ourselves in an over-the-top manner for those mistakes that even being gods ourselves would not fix the problem. The very fact that humans have a problem separating themselves from their own problems would be one of the pieces of the glue of frustration within our hearts.

As for being gods, we would likely not even realize our full potential and capabilities if we were made gods today. It is very likely that we would continue living in fear and doubt, not really being sure of what was right or wrong, and whether or not we would be majorly judged by each other for doing things differently than the way everyone else is doing them.

So, you see, being gods and ruling over dog-like men really wouldn’t be the solution. First we must be able to live in peace and security as humans. First we must be able to create high quality and dependable circumstances for ourselves. Then, if all goes well, we might be set for godhood sometime in the future.

CMM Technology provides drug testing equipment, like our saliva and urine drug tests, as well as individual breathalyser devices, and NATA accredited breathalyser recalibration services. We ask that you check out our popular Medix integrated pro-split cup 6+6 and all of our other high quality drug test equipment. We may not be gods, but we can at least be responsible men and women: (+61) 1300 79 70 30.

Ten Contacts for the Weary

When you are feeling weary and downtrodden, there are some things you can do to pick up your outlook on the world. If you are extroverted,Workplace Drug Test then hanging out with old family friends or being around cheerful laughing people will often do the trick. If you are introverted, then perhaps you should find a good book, a secluded place to be by yourself where you won’t be found or disturbed, and enjoy the stillness of the day or the quiet of the night.

People often say that if you are down, then it is not a good thing to be alone.

They suggest that you get in touch with one or more of your contacts, even if that is something which you rarely would do anyway.

The truth is that it all depends upon the person. What are contacts for some people are simply stress triggers for other people. We’re all so different that it is so important to know what truly fills you up and motivates you before you go about making contacts with people who may or may not be able to pick you up.

Whatever the case, drugs and alcohol are not the solution. In fact, it is better to be a little more stressed out than usual and to be clear headed than to run to substance abuse as soon as the slightest little problem arises.

When you are weary and need a helping hand, look for people who are similar to you who are doing well in their lives. Then, allow them to pick you up and make you feel more successful and hopeful again.

And, let’s face it, that’s what drug abuse really is: the destruction of your last bit of hope.

That’s why your business needs CMM Technology.

When your employees may succumb to these temporary fits of weakness, you need to know about it. You need to be aware of what is going on, and proper drug test equipment will get the job done. When you are looking for reliable data, check us out, and try our popular Alere DDS2 (with reader) saliva drug test. When you are ready to order, give us a call: (+61) 1300 79 70 30.

The Greatest Gold: Human Connection

lifeloc breathalysersHuman connection is so undervalued that it is often overlooked, even in the job selection process. There are certain industries, however, which are oriented directly toward this human connection, and so they understand why skills in this area are vital in the job selection process. The hospitality industry and the travel industry are two examples of areas where people skills count a lot more than technical skills. Humans are delicate creatures at their very core, and they require tender loving care on a pretty regular basis. If your workers can identify this need and align themselves with it, then your business will soar. If however your employees don’t fulfill these requirements, they can seriously damage the reputation that your business has for customer care and quality control. Good news and bad news both spread by word of mouth, and bad news has a propensity for traveling a little bit faster. You need your customers to feel good about your company, not feel threatened by it.

Drug testing is part of the quality control process in any current business. It’s part of how you protect your assets, your employees, and your business reputation from inside influence by workers who have strayed from their professional roles. We say “strayed” because often drug abuse or alcoholism begins this way. Substance abuse is quite insidious, and it drags us down before we know what is happening. It is important to recognize how vulnerable people can be to this process before you judge them too harshly. You cannot help them, no, but you can understand how easily they have slipped down into this particular rut.

Human connection counts.

Protect your greatest gold. Implement drug testing. Implement employee drug testing on a regular basis. Help your business be clean of people who do not respect it or want to be a part of its success. Find out who is fit for duty and who is not. Be proactive.

When you are looking for drug test equipment, visit our website here at CMM Technology. We have a wide supply of products for your screening test needs. Give us a call today: (+61) 1300 79 70 30.

Be A Leader When You’re Weak

It is sometimes easier to be a leader when you are weak than when you are strong. Why is this the case? It usually happens when someone isoral fluid drug test normally an outcast or someone who blends into the background easily and just does what they are told…until they have to come out of their own comfort zone.

It is this comfort zone which inspires people to rest and rejuvenate, but once that has been accomplished, it is the weakness outside of the comfort zone which turns that rest and rejuvenation into productive energy and something worth looking at.

When you are downtrodden and have given up hope, when your life is a mess and things are all going wrong, and when you feel weak and helpless, remember that it may be because you are still inside of your comfort zone long after your rest was complete. Now you must go out into the real world or into whatever area of your life which is making you feel weak at the moment, and you must get good at what you want to achieve. The only way to do that is to be weak and to practice being weak until you can graduate to a slightly stronger level.

CMM Technology provides drug test equipment, including urine drug tests like our Medix integrated pro-split cup 6+6. We know that your business may not be full of people who take their own weakness as a challenge to practice their skills over and over again. We know that you may want to screen your employees, because some of them have been quite a bit lacking in reliability lately. Onsite drug testing is part of this screening process, only more convenient than regular laboratory testing, and with our drug test kits, you will be well on your way to properly testing your employees.

And when you, yourself are feeling weak, remember that leaders can truly lead from both positions, from both strength and weakness. That is the mark of a well developed leader. Therefore, take initiative have your workers tested with drug test equipment from CMM Technology, and give us a call today: (+61) 1300 79 70 30.

Here Today, Vanished Tomorrow

Here Today, Vanished TomorrowThe sample of drug addicted people who have visited counselor’s offices and receive treatment is but a small number of the total number of people who suffer from this. The problem with being an addict is similar to keeping still on a mud slide. You may dig your fingers and toes into the slide, you may try with all of your might to gain traction, but the whole time you are quickly and decidedly oozing down the slide, whether you want to or not.

For non-addicts, it is very easy to gain traction on their lives. They are able to look at the situation, determine where it would be best to dig in their heels, and then do so, with force and assertion.

To live as an addict does, all the resources, all the savings, and all of the abilities to take control of their lives are used up every day, sometimes every hour. They cannot hold onto things, because they do not know how to protect what they value or how to let go of what they dislike. Everything seems backward in their world than it is in the worlds of non-addicts…and this is true.

Many people seek to control their companies by enforcing employee drug testing, but the truth is that you can only control the business operations themselves. You cannot control the people working in your company. Employee drug testing is meant to be an evaluative procedure, not some sort of enforcement. Screening tests cannot prevent your workers from abusing substances. They can only tell you if anyone is doing so.

At CMM Technology, we know how difficult it is to juggle different personalities and different goals among your subordinates. We know how often the whole process seems out of control. That is why we distribute drug test equipment and alcohol tests to businesses all over Australia. As a NATA accredited company, CMM Technology is here to help you with your drug test equipment needs. We provide oral fluid drug tests, like our Rapid STAT saliva drug test, as well as breathalyser devices and even a recalibration service. Our professionalism makes sure that your employees are not here today, gone tomorrow: (+61) 1300 79 70 30.

Diseases of Prediction

Diseases of PredictionWhen you look at the diseases which are common to drug abusers, there are some names which almost always spring to your mind. AIDS, Herpes, HIV, and the Staph Infection are all examples of diseases which are readily associated with drug abuse.

Why is this the case?

The answer lies in how drug addicts transfer these diseases to one another. In another article, we discussed diseases and promiscuity, and the subject arose that many drug addicts are so desirous of their “fix” that they will do anything in order to get their drugs, even sell themselves on the street. This means that people who are not careful about their sexual activities are most likely to get diseases which are deadly or permanent. This lack of social awareness and lack of proper checking up on their partner leads to serious consequences.

AIDS and HIV are related and they often kill the person, either quickly and young, or slowly over time and painfully. This means that being loose with your body can really cost you in the end.

The same thing applies with your mind and emotions.

When drug addicts contract diseases which are predictable among drug abusing communities, the added stress of the sickness can lead to further drug abuse. HIV can easily be contracted by sharing needles when injecting drugs into their system. There are so many ways in which the filth and grime of the streets can get inside the world of a true drug addict and permeate their air and their clothing with sickness and disease.

While you may not be able to check all of your employees for contagious diseases before hiring them, you can at least help to control the problem by implementing very legal company policies to enforce employee drug testing while on the worksite. This is really helpful in the situations where you are not sure about a particular employee, but you are worried about singling someone out or discriminating against someone just based upon your suspicions.

Don’t be in the dark.

Drug Seeking Behaviours

Drug Seeking BehavioursIt is difficult not to open this discussion with the words, “What next?” So many people seem to prefer taking drugs in an attempt to solve their problems. A recent article described an American engineer who promotes exercise, diet and taking a particular drug he has dubbed the “smart drug.” The drug was called this dubious name because he claims it helps healthy people increase their intelligence and mental clarity. The Australian Medical Association prescribes it to treat sleep apnoea, narcolepsy and attention deficit disorder.

Though the engineer claims it is not addictive, he also gave it up for 3 months and preferred to once again begin taking it. Is he addicted? That is a reasonable question. The drug manufacturer says the prescription drug is intended for sleep disorders, shift work sleep disorder and narcolepsy. It also works by blocking dopamine transporters, just like the addictive drugs methamphetamine and cocaine, increasing the amount of dopamine in the brain.1 That is why the drug makes the engineer feel more alert. Why do some people seem to prefer taking drugs to deal with physical, mental and emotional issues? The engineer follows a healthy lifestyle and still chooses to take a prescription drug. Why?

Crossing the Line of Addiction

Employers grapple with this issue on a daily basis, even if the issue is not couched in these precise terms. In the words of the employer: Why do some workers pursue drug seeking behaviours, while others try to avoid using any drugs unless absolutely necessary? In the engineer’s case, he chooses to take a drug because he believes it boosts his mental capacity. Of course, it is only speculation as to what he must be telling his doctor.

Health professionals prescribing drugs are taught to be alert to people exhibiting drug-seeking behaviours. By definition, the behaviour is described as seeking prescription drugs based on falsely reported symptoms or requesting drugs for the purpose of maintaining dependence.2 The term “drug seeking” has been used in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States for over 25 years, but the difficulty is identifying when behaviour becomes unacceptable. Some people really do need prescription drugs containing opioids, benzodiazepines and amphetamines to treat medical conditions. Some people develop a chemical dependence during recovery and continue to seek the drugs long after they are well. In some cases, people get addicted to illicit drugs and then try to fake medical problems so they can legally obtain the drugs for personal use or to sell on the streets to get money for drugs.3

Employers do not have the luxury of deciding if someone has a legitimate medical purpose for taking drugs. However, the employer can observe certain behaviours that might indicate a worker is addicted. In other words, there are workplace drug seeking behaviours. People truly addicted to drugs exhibit uncontrollable, compulsive behaviours, and yet those behaviours may surprise employers by their normalcy. For example, employees may experience increased absenteeism or suddenly disappear from the workplace without notice and with regularity. Unexplained and unusual work mistakes, unnecessary risk taking, and aberrant actions that risk safety of the workers and his/her co-workers may indicate substance abuse or a craving for drugs.

When workers who have typically had a nice appearance begin to deteriorate in terms of personal appearance or give ill-defined medical problems as an excuse for odd behaviour, the changes may indicate addiction. Addiction equates to drug seeking behaviours. If someone is addicted, the person will need drugs to maintain or restore the ‘high’ that drives the behaviour.

Observation Plus Testing

The drug and alcohol random and for-cause testing program gives employers the tools needed to detect workers abusing drugs and alcohol. For-cause testing represents a combination of employers observing behaviours indicating substance use and drug and alcohol testing that proves one way or the other whether a worker is under the influence. It is unfortunate, but healthy workers choose to use illicit substances, prescription drugs, and alcohol for personal reasons.

CMM Technology (http://cmm.com.au/) has a complete product assortment of drug and alcohol tests that include saliva, urine and breathalyser technology. The resources are engineered for accuracy and reliability, two important qualities in every random drug and alcohol testing program.

Drug Screening in a Dangerous Environment

Recalibration Service, Chain Of CustodyHigh hazard industries, such as mining and aviation, are designed specifically to get labor intensive and necessary work done, but this can also be somewhat hazardous for employees, especially when they opt to do extremely dangerous work involving explosives or places where methane gas can develop or build up. Hazardous jobs are one thing, but hazardous working conditions are another. There will always be high risk jobs, most of which pay relatively well, but some working conditions increase the danger to each employee’s health and well being.

In most cases, drug testing is mandatory in high hazard industries. This is to keep unnecessary hazards from infusing the workplace, hazards such as drug addiction and alcoholic behavior. Not only would employees be setting a poor example for each other, but being unable to fully and quickly control your own faculties is a dangerous thing, even in a safe job. However, high hazard positions are fraught with stress, protocol, and safety procedures which are not just followed because it is recommended, but because there are lives at stake. In these jobs, safety protocol such as drug and alcohol testing is necessary.

Employees who are not suited for these positions are people who are overwhelmed by the potential risk involved. This is of course understandable, but not everyone is as easily overwhelmed. Some people enjoy a rock hard challenge, and they enjoy the fact that they must understand everything about their job and their coworkers jobs in order to even be safe while at work. It is not just a thrill ride for them, but a test of their stamina and creativity. When they live up to the challenge, they are met with success. When they are not, they are met with hazard and potentially a fatality. Obviously, not everyone is suited for this type of work.

Drug and alcohol screening is designed to reduce all types of risk within your company, and CMM Technology distributes drug tests and alcohol breathalyser devices which get the job done. Call us today: (+61) 1300 79 70 30.

Drug Testing and Financial Planning

Employee Drug Testing, Drug & Alcohol TestThe president of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Michael Kaiser, discussed the power of financial planning recently in a blog post, stressing how organisations need to actually tie their strategic objectives in with their financial planning. He talks about how often financial planning becomes a bit like an organisation’s first business plan…done correctly, nice too look at, but set on a back shelf because nobody really believes in the change which will occur.

And why should they? Kaiser discusses how it is very easy to organize your strategic planning separate from your financial planning because in the past, many organisations simply do not see their financial books showing more than three or four percent higher in financial numbers due to strategy. Aggressive financial overhaul is done, performed, and then ignored because what the future numbers show in their projections are not consistent with the numbers from the past five years. Kaiser emphasizes the need to have faith and a minimum amount of belief in the wonderful changes which you are implementing.

This method applies when you are evaluating anything in your company, including your employee drug testing program. It does not do very much good to protect yourself legally and financially using employee drug and alcohol screening when you cannot see the change which this brings about. Now, obviously, it may be unwise to experiment with it by removing this protection, but it is still a good idea to keep documentation of previous years and years in which you used drug testing to see how it has helped you and benefitted your business. You may wish to also include reports about individual employees; who was fired, who was kept, and how productivity was changed and affected by that. Either way, documentation of before and after, as well as future projections, can show you how workplace drug testing is a positive financial move for you.

CMM Technology offers high quality drug tests and alcohol breathalyser tests, and we ship to many countries throughout the world, including our native Australia. Call us today: (+61) 1300 79 70 30.

Dealing with Newly Alcoholic Friends and Coworkers

Drug & Alcohol Test, Drug & Alcohol TestingAlcoholism is a sickness which can eat away at a person’s lifestyle and relationships. If you know someone who has become an alcoholic, it is worth noting a few tips for how to deal with them. If they are your friend or family member or coworker, then you will probably be spending time with them, anyway. Since they may not necessarily act like themselves all of the time due to their alcoholism, here are some helpful hints on how to interact with them and be friends with them without falling victim to this disease yourself.

Recognise that they cannot be helped by you. The only person who can help an alcoholic is the alcoholic. Many people have tried, and failed, to rehabilitate a loved one themselves. And they have spent a great deal of time and money and effort and energy and heartache attempting this. Unless they choose to change themselves and do all of the work themselves, they cannot be helped.

Anticipate and create distance when necessary. Alcoholism rarely plateaus and gives you an even level playing field. In most cases, the alcoholic will continue to disintegrate until they have very little left or until they turn themselves around. For this reason, you must protect yourself and your friendship with them by creating distance between yourself and them when it is necessary. Keep in mind that, unless they alter their behavior, you will probably be creating more and more distance as time goes on.

Expect their behavior toward you to change. Alcoholism is an all-encompassing disease, and it affects everyone around it. Your friend may imagine that you are treating them with less than their due respect, they may become angry and even violent toward for no reason, and they may imagine scenarios with you in them which are not true. Their behavior toward you will change, because their ability to reason and remember correctly will be deformed. When they become antagonistic, that is a good time to quickly get up and leave.

They may not return from their sickness. If you love them, this fact will be especially hard to accept and believe. After all, surely they can return and be the friend that you know and remember so well. However, unless they take personal responsibility for their actions and actively turn their life around and work on it day by day, this may not happen. As much as you love and care about them, they may not come back.

Workplace drug and alcohol testing eliminates the need to decide all on your own which employees to let go. Drug testing allows you to present documented scientific evidence that they have a problem and are not employable by your company. It gives you a legal peace of mind. Call CMM Technology today to find out more about our quality drug tests: (+61) 1300 79 70 30.

Problem drinking puts extra workload on co-workers

Recalibration, BreathalyserA co-worker who doesn’t pull their own weight is a burden in any workplace. New Australian research has shown that too many Australian workers are being forced to cover for a workmate with a drinking problem. The research adds weight to calls for increasedalcohol testing in workplaces.

Almost one in 10 Australian workers has been impacted by a co-worker with an alcohol problem, according to the latest research.

A 2010 survey of 1677 Australian workers published in the Medical Journal of Australia has reported that eight per cent of respondents had been “negatively impacted by a co-worker’s drinking” in the past year.

The research has uncovered some of the hidden effects of excess alcohol, testing Australian workers’ tolerance by increasing workloads and safety risks.

Researchers Dale and Livingston found 3.5 per cent had worked extra hours to compensate for a co-worker’s alcohol consumption.

More than four per cent reported that their ability to work had been compromised by a co-worker’s drinking in the past year.

The research supports a growing trend toward drug and alcohol testing in workplaces, both in Australia and overseas. While motorists have become familiar with breath alcohol tests, the introduction of drug and alcohol tests in work places has not been without resistance.

However, the weight of safe work requirements has made alcohol testing common practice, particularly in heavy industry worksites including transport, construction trades, mining and manufacturing.

National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) researchers believe the correlation between alcohol and drug use and workplace productivity has traditionally been hard to quantify.

Previous research, mostly based in the US, had been inconsistent but two recent Australian studies (including the Dale and Livingston survey) have tackled the issue at the coal face.

By interviewing workers and not just top-end management the extent of the problem has become more evident.

A survey of nearly 5000 Australian railway employees in 2000 found that almost 20 per cent reported having helped out a workmate with a drinking problem. The most common issues identified were:

  • Absenteeism;
  • Health problems;
  • Poor quality work
  • Poor safety measures.

An alcohol and drug free workplace not only improves productivity, but also reduces the stress on co-workers – many of whom would like to see the introduction of an alcohol and drug test. Osborne Park-based CMM Technology is a leading supplier of drug testing products in Western Australia. For more information about screening tests contact 1300 797030 or visit www.cmm.com.au.
