Drug Hotspots

These hotspots are found in urban and regional areas. They are not confined to cities as was once assumed and thought. While certain areas in cities are of concern, there are also a host of regional centres that are also of concern to police and drug and alcohol workers. Some of the areas singled out for concern in recent times include:

  • Mackay in Central Queensland
  • Perth – South-east metropolitan area
  • Cabramatta in Sydney
  • St.Kilda, Melbourne
  • Richmond, Melbourne
  • Nimbin and surrounds, northern NSW

According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, a range of considerations need to be incorporated to deal with drug use hotspots.[1]

Western Australia

On 26 May 2011, it was reported that Western Australia actually topped the nation for the illegal use of drugs. While usage seems to have fallen marginally in recent years in some areas, “western Australia continues to be higher than the national average, according to a report tabled in the Western Australian State parliament.”[2]

The report was produced by the Education and Health Standing Committee, and made mention of the Goldfields and Kimberley as two drug use hotspot areas of major concern.  It also said that Western Australia had not trained enough doctors and health professionals in the area of drug and alcohol in the past ten years, and so there is a shortage of appropriate caregivers and specialists in the sphere.

Given this information, it seems now more than ever businesses and organisations need to stay informed and wary of drug use, drug use areas, and how these may impact production, workplace, industry and profits. CMM Technology understands these concerns and supplies quality testing technologies that can help prevent drug use onsite or in your firm, and can also help to ensure adherence to your carefully developed Occupational Health and Safety Procedures.
