Identifying and assessing workplace hazards

The most effective way to implement an operational OHS system is to regularly conduct a risk assessment or safety audit. Ideally, this should be managed by an industry professional. However, employees, supervisors, managers and business owners are (to varying degrees) legally required to ensure a safe workplace too.

From a legal standpoint then, a quality OHS system necessitates that all staff within a business do receive adequate OHS training to ensure they are capable of actioning appropriate risk and hazard identification assessment in the workplace. They should also be  informed of the official channels to voice ongoing safety concerns that are not addressed adequately within the workplace; as well as receive proper training in the deployment of effective responses to immediate safety concerns or breaches.

Some basic tips for implementing a quality risk assessment program (in order to minimise workplace injury), includes:

  • Identifying potential hazards by walking through the workplace regularly and locating potential hazards and risks.
  • Convening OHS meetings to discuss risk factors with co-workers and management.
  • Conducting a regular injury records audit to help pinpoint and analyse recurring problems.
  • Facilitating regular VETAB accredited OHS training to help keep workplace OHS training and risk identification methods aligned with current legislation and industry best practice.
  • Consulting regularly with OHS professionals and workplace law specialists to obtain sound legal advice and OHS policy guidance.
